Christmas 2008

We've not really had friends over to our home for meals since our stay in Sweden. This Christmas, we decided it's time to get-a-cookin'! Planning the menu wasn't too hard; I whipped out something I had prepared before from my favourite Jamie Oliver's Happy Days with The Naked Chef! There was the Arugula salad with warm oyster mushrooms, and a Sweet and Sour pot-roasted chicken! Plus some foccacia we bought from an Italian diner... all's set before the invited guests arrived!

We were doing some grocery shopping at Dempsey for our Christmas Day dinner, when Dave decided to have meat this Christmas eve! Amazed at our own (and Tina's) spontaneity... the 3 of us had a pretty fun time at The Prime Society!

We proceeded to Max Brenner for some sinful chocolate desserts. There was a huge jam along Orchard Road, making Esplanade seemed like a much further way out; we contemplated u-turning back to Dempsey.... but we figured we would have problem getting a parking space, and being the designated driver that I am, I don't think I'm capable of getting us u-turned back in the jam!!! hah hah!... so we watched the pretty sights of last-minute christmas shoppers and christmas lights from the car! And anyways... what would Christmas be like without chocolates?!?!!

my 冬至

  • Dec 23, 2008
  • Post a comment
I have only very recently heard of Winter Solstice (冬至 - "Dongzhi" as the Chinese calls it). First, it was Santa Lucia day in Sweden (Dec13), and this year in Asia, it falls on Sunday (21Dec08). The Chinese Dongzhi is the day when "sunshine is weakest and daytime shortest, the Yin qualities of darkness, of cold, are at their most powerful.... From this day on, Yang gets stronger and stronger until it prevails with the earth's 5 awakening in the glorious rebirth of spring." This is supposed to be a time for celebration and families will gather together to eat the pink and white balls of glutinous rice known as TangYuan (湯圓), which symbolizes reunion.

Although we did not have tangyuan, we managed to have hainanese family dinner together on Sunday, and on Monday, Heng Hua cuisine with my in-laws. How appropriate... since Dave's family are HengHua!

The Hainanese Family's hainanese dinner

Instead of our weekly RC family Sunday dinner, Pa decided we should all go out (well... everyone else is away on vacation anyways). Loved the idea! What a nice change!

Dinner venue was at Mooi Chin at the Golden Landmark Hotel. Grandpa was amazed that this was really THE Mooi Chin that he used to frequent when the family was living in Middle Road (when my dad was still just a kid!).... when Mooi Chin was still located at the original Hainan 2nd Street (aka Purvis Street now)! We arrived at the restaurant early and he was trying to speak hainanese to all the waiters and find out if this was really that Mooi Chin (yea, grandpa could not just take my word for it... since whatever I know is from the web!) and if the old boss was still the same one!

11 Dec 2008:

We touched down in Copenhagen very early in the morning. I remember vividly what I did when we stepped out of the airport... I inhaled. I've forgotten how fresh and crisp air can be, and my lungs can't seem to get enough of it. It's official; it's winter and I love it!

I took in the familiar sights as we travelled across the Oresund Bridge to Malmo. The last time I was here was last October, as much as I wish to take annual vacation to Malmo, I do wonder when the next trip will be... with the impending delivery of our baby.
After hotel check-in, we walked to our favourite Cafe Solde for the best coffee in Malmo... and some nice wholesome breakfast.

Lunch was at Smak, situated in the Malmo Concerthall just a short walk behind the hotel. The place was packed with the lunch crowd.... but that's Smak for you.

Dave had to work, and I hung out in the hotel room reading for awhile, before heading out for some christmas shopping. Met up again at Restaurang Davidshalls later in the evening. Our first time at this tapas place... not as fantastic as La Roche in my opinion, but we enjoyed our first dinner together in Malmo nevertheless!

Hilton breakfast never disappoints. I had a huge one. Breakfast is afterall my favourite meal of the day! And I need all the energy for a full day out! Plus, we'll be celebrating our 8th wedding anniversary tonight!

My lunch date was with Karren and Katherine at the Malmo Opera Grill. I've read so much about how good this restaurant is but funny why Dave and I have never been there when we were still living in Malmo! So I think this was definitely a perfect place to lunch with my two English friends whom I got to know from my Swedish language class! How wonderful it is that we're still keeping in touch!

Coffee after lunch was at the Espresso House in Davidshallstoget. There was really so much to catch up, and I was deeply impressed with how fluent Karren has gotten with her Swedish; she could hold endless conversations with the local swedes!!!! <applause>
They waited with me for Dave to knock off from work at Vendel. This is THE chosen place where we'll be celebrating our anniversary!

We dedicated the whole of today for the baby. Bought the Stokke highchair and the Baby Bjorn Balance babysitter from this really nice baby shop called Bonti on Stora Nygaten. 16 December 2008:
After our last Hilton breakfast, we made our way to Copenhagen airport. It was definitely a good break for us... the slow pace, the weather, the food, the friends, and simply just being together on our own was really what we needed... but we were looking forward to be home too! There's still much to be done at home for the baby!!!

Before I fly....

  • Dec 10, 2008

We're leaving for our mini winter vacation in about 8 hours time, and I'm having so much trouble packing. None of my tops seem to be long enough to cover my growing belly. And even if they do right now, I doubt it'll stay covered after a meal over there. Dave says I should bring as much stuff as I want to... including the boots, jackets, bags; he knows how much I'm missing the winter and its fashion! But alas... I can't even button up my pretty trench coat!

Still, I'm feeling all excited about our babymoon! And we'll be celebrating our 8th Wedding Anniversary as well!!! All  dinner plans have more or less been firmed up... can't wait to see some old friends and just chilling out in the city that's still very much home to me.

Was reading up on some tips to make a flight for a 26 weeks preggy a more comfortable one:
(1) drink plenty of water
(2) avoid caffeine
(3) don't eat food that causes gas for at least one day before you travel (pressure builds up as you ascend through the altitudes and could cause pain)
(4) walk the aisles to keep the circulation in the body
(5) stretch while sitting
(6) wear loose fitting clothing
(7) wear slip on shoes (your feet may swell)
(8) wear maternity support pantyhose or socks
(9) get an aisle seat or a front row seat for more leg room
(10) eat light foods
(11) eat small meals or snacks at frequent intervals
(12) do not eat salt
(13) place seat belt under abdomen
(14) get signed note from doctor, stating how far along you are and that they give permission to fly

I should be all set...
once I settle my luggage, that is!

Will be back in a week... till then!!!

Singapore Marathon 2008

Dave did his half-marathon yesterday. The weather was perfect and he did better than expected... not more than 2hr 14min for 21km; we'll have to wait for the exact timing when the results get updated online. It was really such an accomplishment as he'd trained as much as he could amidst the busy work and travel schedule. I was his runspirator... but I must say I was the one being inspired when I saw the runners making it to the finishing line. All the sweat, pain, aches.... it was victorious. I hope I can do the run next year.

the last of my 2nd trimester

  • Dec 5, 2008
  • Post a comment

Went for my 6th month checkup yesterday.

Although Dr Tseng never insists that ultrasounds are needed for every checkup... but one of the main reasons why we always look forward to the gynea visits is to be able to have a visual on the baby! So other than listening to the baby's heartbeats... this was the scan at 24 weeks. Baby is looking down; you can see the vertebrae on top.

Scan-24w1d (nice spine... my little dude!)
Scan-24w1d (nice spine... my little dude!)

Within 5 weeks, the baby has put on 446g!!! He's now 742g!!!  Doctor said he's at a normal weight, but according to BabyCentre, baby's weight at this stage should be 600g!!!

As I progress into the last 2 weeks of my 2nd trimester, I have to admit this pregnancy has been relatively easy so far. No morning sickness (yet!), no stretch marks (yet!), no water retention (yet!). Other than being sleepy pretty often, and having rashes on my stomach... it's been a bliss (fingers crossed). Oh! Come to think of it... I think I may be suffering a new symptom.... have been quite emotional lately. Just last night, I got all teary cus my MIL lost my toilet rug. Argh. Silly me.

Another girlfriend of mine will be delivering her baby coming Monday. Her doctor advised her to induce since her baby girl is almost 3.5kg!!! Happy delivery, Jorene!
